After reading the "Report: Polce Shoot Baby Deer in Oakland for No Reason", I have 2 comments that I want to express. First, I feel that this incident is not just a matter of animal abuse. But this issue can be brought up to discuss in a more advanced level which matters about the native American's culture. Deer in the native American's minds present the connection between human and spirit. Now, the police killed the deer for no reason, meaning the police's action totally violated the native American's culture and civilization in which deer is very spiritual to them. The police violent killing of the deer symbolizes a disrespect to the native Americans. Second, this poem is an excellent for student to study on poem analysis. For example, the author uses the word "step" to visualize the heart beat of the deer from struggling for life and then dying without hope. And, there are many repetitions in places to give a focus on the idea that the author is trying to express. Also, the author uses consonance to make a point in the poem to attract readers' attentions.

It's very eye opening about the deer being a human and spirit connection because if I saw a deer, let alone a baby deer, in the middle of the city it'd be like putting an innocent baby in my way. If there was a baby in your way what would you do? Kill it or protect it? I felt like for the cops to kill the fawn, they lost that connection so they show that they have no soul and have just lost their humanity.
ReplyDeleteFirst off, I loved how you eloquently written a very good analysis of your feelings about the poem. I live in Oakland for a majority of my life, and I have heard everything from homicide to suicide, I feel like shooting the baby deer is the worse. In addition, I do agree with you that the deer symbolizes similarly to Native Americans. When both the deer and the Native Americans enter urban society, they will be treated with no respect. I think that's one reason why the poet feels so strongly and upset about the death of the baby deer.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you that it could be looked at as disrespect to the Native Americans because the police killed the deer that has no spritual significance to them. On another note I like at the end of the poem when she said
ReplyDelete"Step and the blood soaks back to ground
Step and the blood soaks back to soil;"
This symbolizes the continuation of life through the fawns blood.
